DEEZO Fest

31 Mar

Last weekend at Minnie Harris Park in Harrison, Arkansas was the 3rd annual DEEZO Fest, a free, open to the public concert featuring ten bands from the surround area including Knife Death, Bringers of the Dawn, The Spacetones and Jah Kings.  This was the first year I was asked to come provide sound reinforcement, and I had a great time do so.  Despite the cold, rainy weather, the show was enjoyed by all in attendance.

Woofer Replacement at LemonDrop

25 Mar

A couple of months ago at the LemonDrop headquarters, an inexperienced sound guy brought in by some band managed to blow 3 out of 4  of the 15″ woofers in the dual-15″ two-way cabinets that run as mains.  This so called “sound guy” must have pushed the system to ear-piercing levels, as the speakers weren’t even running full range, they were being crossed at 90Hz with a pair of subs.  Anyhow, my frustration aside, I ordered four new Eminence Kappa woofers to replace the old Electro-Voice Force drivers.

Having used Eminence drivers in countless other cabinets, I am quite fond of their build quality, sound and reliability, all at a lower cost than many other professional loudspeaker manufacturers.  The new Eminence are spec’ed to handle three times the power that the EVs did, so hopefully this is the last time such a replacement is needed.

I definitely prefer the sound of the Kappas over that of the Forces and find them to be a bit flatter across the mid-frequency spectrum.  I’m running sound at LemonDrop tonight for a “hardcore” show, which will give me a bit of time to get to know the new drivers.

Rainy Day

25 Mar

Seemingly appropriate for the weather, I couldn’t help but do some critical listening of the track “Rainy Day” from The Spacetones’ upcoming mix-tape, Welcome to the Planet of Drugs & (e)Money, set to drop May 5.  I was honored when the ‘tones asked me to be a part of the production process and my excitement only grows as the project evolves.  Sorry, no sound samples today, but I anticipate a preview coming soon.
