Infinity RS5b Woofer Refoam

21 Jul

I recently acquired some Infinity RS5b speakers in nearly perfect condition.  However, the foam surrounds on the woofers would crumble if you so much as looked at the speakers, but that’s a fix I can handle, and this seemed like a project worthy of my time.

Sure enough, new surrounds were easily found online and with only a few hours of work, the speakers were restored to new.

In my excitement to get these things in listenable condition, I forgot to take “before” pictures, so you’ll just have just take my word for it.

Woofer Replacement at LemonDrop

25 Mar

A couple of months ago at the LemonDrop headquarters, an inexperienced sound guy brought in by some band managed to blow 3 out of 4  of the 15″ woofers in the dual-15″ two-way cabinets that run as mains.  This so called “sound guy” must have pushed the system to ear-piercing levels, as the speakers weren’t even running full range, they were being crossed at 90Hz with a pair of subs.  Anyhow, my frustration aside, I ordered four new Eminence Kappa woofers to replace the old Electro-Voice Force drivers.

Having used Eminence drivers in countless other cabinets, I am quite fond of their build quality, sound and reliability, all at a lower cost than many other professional loudspeaker manufacturers.  The new Eminence are spec’ed to handle three times the power that the EVs did, so hopefully this is the last time such a replacement is needed.

I definitely prefer the sound of the Kappas over that of the Forces and find them to be a bit flatter across the mid-frequency spectrum.  I’m running sound at LemonDrop tonight for a “hardcore” show, which will give me a bit of time to get to know the new drivers.
